Perla's parents immigrated from Mexico and Guatemala in pursuit of a better life. Cultural differences and diversity played a role in shaping Perla's world. Even though she came from humble beginnings, she was taught that through hard work and education, anything was possible. Perla has embodied those beliefs and those values. She believes they belong to all people. As such, education reform is a top priority.
One area of education that is in dire need of improvement is overspending. You've seen it and you've lived it. The (insert name of) district spends too much, a new bond gets drawn up and voted on, and our debt grows. Property taxes skyrocket. We need to be smarter about how we allocate our funds. We need to hire education professionals who are concerned with growing kids into adults versus just growing their career. We must hold people accountable when they are not good stewards of the taxpayers' money. Critical Race Theory started out as a way to examine racial inequalities in America and how previous laws and customs perpetuated those inequalities. The research was concluded; however, there are a small number of people and groups using the banner of CRT to push political and social agendas through inappropriate teaching and training. Perla firmly believes in the fundamental rights of all people and abhors discrimination. It isn't popular to say things like this in our current culture of cancellation and mistruths, but CRT, whether intentionally or not, has become a vehicle for these agendas that have no place in the education and division of our kids.
When instructional materials (IMs) and lesson plans are not directly tied to the TEKS, learning outcomes will continue to decline. According to the 2020-21 STAAR Performance (TAPR) State results in Reading, our students are mostly performing below grade levels: Above or Meets Grade Level 3rd Grade - 39% 4th Grade - 36% 5th Grade - 46% 6th Grade - 32% 7th Grade - 45% 8th Grade - 46% * Source Link: TEA State Report The End-of-Course assessments in secondary schools also indicate a failure to provide basic skill levels to public school students. Students performing low on Advanced Placement Exams (College Board) or receiving low grades in courses such as English correlates to much-needed work that begins with the removal of harming ideologies. Perla will continue to collaborate with the Texas School Board of Education members and reform our education system using best practices and ensuring that only quality, inspiring, and educational books are available to all students.
Parents - would you like to send your kids to the School you Choose or continue Homeschooling? Perla believes that state and federal funding provided for each child should follow the child. Akin to the principles of a free market, she believes this would encourage districts and individual schools to "clear out the swamp" and maximize their performance to attract students. Perla will research legislation similar to the voucher system/ESAs to evaluate whether this is necessary. However, guaranteeing a Safe and Quality Public Education is the top resolution! Every child deserves equal opportunity, a growth mindset and rigorous education in the Great State of Texas.
Perla will continue to defend child rights and assure that parents are a full partner in their children's education. There should be zero tolerance in Texas for district administrators and leaders who intimidate and retaliate against parents and concerned citizens.
Let's bring Texas Education back!!!
